Role Reversal

Connor just turned one recently, and my sister (Hi, Leah!) and I both got him one of those sprinklers for kids to run through. You know, the kind that you screw onto the end of your hose, and it sprays water pretty gently? Right. Those. She got him an Elmo one (I don't know either ... you'll have to ask her), and I got him a Batman one.

So last week I was home alone with the boys, and we were outside playing. I had hooked up the Batman sprinkler, and Michael was running around in it, then he wanted to switch to the Elmo one. I tried to be accomodating, but I just couldn't get it off the hose. I really tried, but I couldn't unscrew it. Michael said, "It's okay, Dad. We can just wait 'til Mommy gets home and she can do it."

But a couple of days later, he asked her what we were having for dinner, and she said she didn't know, so he said, "I guess we'd better call Dad."

That doesn't totally make up for the earlier incident, but it helps.

Inside, Outside, Upside Down

So, I recently took Michael to 7-Eleven so's we could bond over some Slurpees, and we took the Miata, 'cause that's just what we like to do. We're on the freeway, but there's traffic and we're going slowly, and he asks me "Are we outside?" Which is a pretty fair question, since we're in the car, but the top's down and everything. I asked him what he thought, and he said "Umm ... yeah!"

So after getting the Slurpees, I had to swing by the post office to drop something off, and we exit through out the back into our neighborhood. So Angie's taught me about the importance of labelling things for language development, so I say "We're in our neighborhood." Michael says, "No. We're outside."
